Most of the rules on who may perform a treatment, and under whose supervision, come from licensing regulators like the ones on this page, working under the law where you practice. Other agencies can apply to some devices, products and settings. Go to the source and read it yourself.
How to use this page. Find where you practice. Read what the nursing board and the medical board say about the services on your menu, who may perform them, and what supervision each requires. For cosmetic services performed by estheticians, read the cosmetology board too. Record what you found, the date, and the page you read, on the free verification sheet. 253 entries. Each link was opened and confirmed on September 24, 2026, and the links are rechecked monthly. Regulators rename, merge and move their pages. If a link fails, search the official name shown and tell us at the shop. 6 entries are listed without a link because the link could not be confirmed; search those names directly. Some places also have separate osteopathic, practical nursing or advanced practice boards. Some are noted below, but that list is not complete, so check with the main board. This page lists regulators. It does not describe what any of them require, and it is not legal advice.
United States
Federal, all states. Medical devices, their clearance status and device adverse event reporting are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration: search its 510(k) database for a device's clearance, and report device problems through MedWatch. Controlled substances are regulated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Diversion Control Division. Some states also register lasers or IPL, or license their operators, through a state radiation control program, which the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors lists. Search those names directly. Direct links will be added once confirmed.
